As the world recovered from the pandemic, 2022 saw a surge in M&A activity in the first half of the year, as the economy opened up at the back of 2021 and eagerness grew from strategic investors and private equity funds to use their capacity.

Mergermarket data reveals annual deal value surpassed $5 trillion, with nearly 26,000 transactions announced worldwide.

Sectors such as technology, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure (particularly renewables) saw increased deal flow throughout the year and we anticipate this trend to continue.

There was an increase in the number of established insurers that entered the Asia-Pacific market, which stabilised capacity issues and created some healthy competition on pricing.

Our outlook for H1 2023 is a return to a buyer’s market with stable to reduced pricing and increased capacity due to new market entrants and insurers bolstering their underwriting capability, hungry for deals in the Pacific.

Whilst we remain positive around deal pipeline, we are beginning to face some economic, social, and geopolitical headwinds across Australia and New Zealand.

Some of these risks include geopolitical uncertainty, driving inflation, interest rate rises, the everchanging landscape around tax, continued developments of cyber threats, the acceleration of the digital economy, supply chain disruptions, and heightened scrutiny around environmental, social and governance programs – all of which are putting some sustained pressure around integration and conventional M&A activity patterns.
